It’s not too late to switch sides. In fact, according to Amazon, now is the perfect time. You order an Xbox Series X, you’ll get it by tomorrow, just in time for the early release of Starfield.
I get it…trust me. Sony closed out last generation super strong God of War and Spiderman, then Last of Us 2, and Ghost of Tsushima a month apart in the final year of the console generation? Crazy! The hype was up going into PS5, and by most accounts, PS5 has started off strong.
By most accounts.
I’m going to predict something, and when I predict things, I’m rarely wrong. My abundance of fantasy football championship belts sort of stand behind me on that fact.
This generation belongs to Xbox, and this generation starts tomorrow.
“But…this generation has been here since the end of 2020…”
Has it though?
As I stated above, by most accounts, Sony has started off this generation pretty strong. I’d argue however, Sony has barely started this generation. Most of their heavy hitters have been continuations of last-gen all lacking generational jumps worthy of the power of PS5. Miles Morales was an add-on to Spiderman, which, released last-gen. Ghost of Tsushima got remastered. Horizon Forbidden West wasn’t a generational jump from Horizon Zero Dawn, and God of War Ragnorok was essentially the end of the previous God of War game, continued in the same universe, same engine, again, not a generational change. They’re about to release Spider-Man 2, and it looks a lot like the last Spiderman game. It looks cool, no doubt, but so did the last Spiderman game. Remove those from the equation and what are we working with? Grand Turismo, Returnal and Ratchet and Clank? Not saying I haven’t enjoyed PS5 (most of it…wasn’t the hugest on Horizon Forbidden West, I’ll discuss that later), but let’s keep it 100.
Let’s keep it a 1000, it’s not like Microsoft has pushed them to drop anything groundbreaking. What has Microsoft released on Xbox Series X (or S)? Halo Infinite was cool. It reviewed well. Originally it wasn’t the greatest received by the public due to missing features, but it’s gotten better over time. Forza Horizon was good…but racing games are kind of expected. I’d say Redfall doesn’t need to be discussed, but Redfall was an attempt at something new. It failed…but it was an attempt. Hi-Fi Rush? A lot of talk about Hi-Fi Rush, and not to say it’s not a good game, but if THAT’s what we’re talking about from Microsoft from this gen, it’s no wonder Sony hasn’t felt the need to push harder.
Alas…this all changes tomorrow.
I’m 100% confident Starfield will be a great game. I’m 100% confident Starfield will be a generational game. I’m 100% confident Starfield will be a “That’s why I switched to next-gen” level game. That’s great, but even better we know Microsoft has more in the immediate pipeline after Starfield’s release. Forza Motorsports drops this year (we’re not hyping a racing game by itself though). Stalker 2 drops early next year, Hellblade 2: Senua’s Saga drops next year, Avowed drops next year. Those are major games…and I’m sure I’m missing some that were recently announced. All of these major games will be available day one for Game Pass s+ubscribers.
What is Sony releasing next year PS5?
Microsoft’s purchase of a million and one studios is about to start paying off because those studios are now about to start releasing games. They have so much depth that it allows them time to work on their games, because there are other studios to pick up the slack, and other studios waiting for their shot to go next. The Activision deal hasn’t even closed yet.
What does Sony have in the pipeline for PS5? Wolverine next year, maybe? Will that use the same engine we’ve seen on Spiderman going back to PS4? Ghost of Tsushima 2 can’t be coming any time soon…when it does, will it be a generational jump, or Horizon Forbidden West level jump?
I’m calling it now, and to be clear, this isn’t an easy prediction. It may look like it once I’m proven right…but right now, everybody won’t be on board. I embrace the hate…it’ll just make me look even more genius.
So go ahead…purchase that Xbox Series X now while you can still have it delivered by tomorrow.
